The Tamil Nadu government announced a three-year policy to promote battery energy storage systems, aiming to strengthen renewable power integration in the state.

Chennai – The state government of Tamil Nadu has released a comprehensive three-year policy focused on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The framework is intended to accelerate the deployment of large‑scale storage solutions that can balance supply and demand, especially as solar and wind generation expands across the region.

The policy outlines incentives for manufacturers, developers and end‑users, and sets targets for installing storage capacity over the next three years. It also calls for coordination with the state's power distribution utilities to ensure grid stability and to reduce curtailment of renewable energy.

Officials said the initiative aligns with India's broader clean energy goals and is expected to attract private investment while creating skilled jobs in the emerging storage sector.

The announcement was made during a press conference attended by senior officials from the Energy Department and industry representatives, who welcomed the clear regulatory roadmap.

Implementation will be monitored by a dedicated task force that will review progress quarterly and recommend adjustments as needed.
