The Tamil Nadu government has submitted a proposal to the Centre for three new extensions to the Chennai Metro network, coinciding with the imminent inauguration of the first Phase‑2 corridor.

The state government has formally submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs seeking approval for three new extensions to the Chennai Metro system.

The extensions are intended to connect underserved suburbs and enhance connectivity across the metropolitan area, complementing the existing network.

The proposal comes as the first Phase‑2 corridor of the metro, which will add several kilometres to the line, is set to open in the coming weeks.

Tamil Nadu is hoping that central support will facilitate the timely completion of the extensions and further strengthen the city’s public transport infrastructure.
