Groundwater levels across Tamil Nadu have fallen to their lowest point in 16 years, prompting officials to stress the upcoming monsoon as the only relief.

The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department released data showing that the state's groundwater table has dropped to its lowest level in the past sixteen years. The decline, observed across major districts, follows several years of over-extraction for agricultural and domestic use. Experts warn that the shortfall could exacerbate water scarcity for farmers and urban households alike.

State officials have highlighted the imminent monsoon as the sole natural source to replenish the depleted aquifers. While the monsoon forecast remains optimistic, authorities are urging water‑conservation measures, including regulated irrigation and rainwater harvesting, to mitigate the impact.

The department plans to monitor the recharge rates closely once the rains arrive and will issue periodic updates to the public. In the meantime, communities are being advised to limit non‑essential water usage until the groundwater levels show signs of recovery.
