Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Anwar Dhebar, Bans Him from Chhattisgarh

The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Anwar Dhebar in the Chhattisgarh liquor scam case, while prohibiting him from staying within the state.
The Supreme Court, in a 12‑page order, granted interim bail to Anwar Dhebar, the former chairman of the Chhattisgarh State Liquor Corporation, who is accused of siphoning off ₹2.5 billion in liquor sales. The court, while acknowledging the gravity of the allegations, found that the prosecution had not established a prima facie case for detention.
In its ruling, the court also imposed a condition that Dhebar must not leave the state of Chhattisgarh and must report regularly to the authorities. The order was passed after a hearing that saw the petitioner's counsel argue that the accused faces undue hardship if detained.
The liquor scam, which came to light in 2021, involved the diversion of state liquor revenues to private accounts. Anwar Dhebar has been a central figure in the investigation, with the Enforcement Directorate filing charges against him.
The interim bail is a temporary relief; the case will continue to be examined by the court, which has directed the prosecution to present a detailed report on the alleged siphoning within 30 days.
