The Supreme Court has ruled that candidates need only one year of practice, down from the previous three-year requirement, to be eligible for judicial appointments.

The Supreme Court announced a revision to the eligibility criteria for entry into the judicial service, lowering the mandatory period of legal practice from three years to one year. The ruling, issued by a bench of the apex court, applies uniformly to all aspirants seeking appointment to lower courts across the country.

Legal experts say the reduction will widen the candidate pool and help address the chronic vacancy problem in the judiciary. By easing the experience requirement, the court aims to accelerate recruitment and bring fresh talent into the judicial system.

The new standard obliges applicants to provide proof of at least one year of practice before appearing for the relevant examinations. The decision also reflects earlier recommendations to make the judiciary more accessible and responsive to the nation’s growing legal needs.
