Sri Lanka has extended an invitation to refugees residing in Tamil Nadu to return, but the path to repatriation remains fraught with challenges.
Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that it is ready to accept refugees currently living in Tamil Nadu, offering them a chance to return to their homeland.
The invitation comes amid growing concerns about the safety and well‑being of Sri Lankan nationals who fled the civil war and settled in the Indian state. Estimates suggest that several thousand refugees have been living in Tamil Nadu for more than a decade.
However, officials warn that repatriation will involve complex legal, logistical and emotional hurdles. Many refugees face uncertainty about documentation, property claims and the possibility of reintegration into communities that have changed over the years.
The Sri Lankan government has pledged to streamline the process, but it will require coordination with Indian authorities, NGOs and the refugees themselves to ensure a smooth transition.
