Soreng, a town in Sikkim, has been officially notified as the country’s inaugural organic fisheries cluster under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

Soreng, a small town in the western district of Gyalshing, Sikkim, has received formal notification as India’s first organic fisheries cluster under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The designation marks a milestone for the state’s aquaculture sector, which has been promoting chemical‑free fish farming for several years.

The organic fisheries cluster aims to consolidate local fish farmers, provide them with certification support, and facilitate market linkages for sustainably raised fish. By adhering to organic standards, producers can command premium prices and contribute to environmentally friendly practices that protect the region’s fragile Himalayan ecosystems.

PMMSY, a central government scheme focused on modernising and scaling India’s fisheries, will extend technical assistance, training, and financial incentives to the Soreng cluster. Officials expect the initiative to boost rural livelihoods, increase fish production without chemical inputs, and serve as a replicable model for other states.

State authorities plan to monitor the cluster’s progress closely and explore expansion into nearby villages, aiming to create a network of organic fish farms that can supply both domestic markets and niche export segments.
