Sikkim to start Aadhaar biometric attendance on Oct 1, salary cut for missed logs

From October 1, the Sikkim government will mandate Aadhaar‑linked biometric attendance for its employees, with salary deductions for days when attendance is not recorded.
The state administration announced that, beginning 1 October, all government offices in Sikkim will use an Aadhaar‑based biometric system to record employee attendance. The move aims to modernise time‑keeping and curb absenteeism across the public sector.
Under the new directive, each staff member must scan their Aadhaar‑linked fingerprint or iris data at the start and end of the workday. Attendance data will be uploaded in real time to a central server managed by the state’s IT department.
Employees who fail to register their presence for a working day will face a salary deduction as prescribed by the state’s service rules. Officials said the policy will be enforced uniformly and that grievance mechanisms will be in place for any technical glitches.
The initiative aligns with the central government's push for digital identity integration in administrative processes and is expected to improve efficiency in public service delivery.
