The Sikkim Pollution Control Board has urged residents to observe Deepawali without firecrackers to reduce pollution and protect air quality.

The Sikkim Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has issued a public notice urging people across the state to celebrate Deepawali without the use of firecrackers. The board cited rising levels of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides during the festival season as a major health concern. "Firecrackers contribute significantly to air pollution and can aggravate respiratory ailments," the notice read.

SPCB officials recommend alternative ways to mark the festival, such as lighting diyas, playing traditional music, and organizing community feasts. The board also highlighted the benefits of reduced pollution for wildlife and the overall environment. "A cleaner Deepawali will improve the quality of life for all residents," the notice added.

The call comes amid growing national and state‑level initiatives to curb firecracker usage. While the board has not imposed a ban, it encourages voluntary compliance and offers guidance on safer celebration practices. Residents are encouraged to follow local guidelines and support the state’s efforts to protect air quality during the festive season.
