An 18‑kilometre cleanliness trek by a Sikkim civil servant has motivated self‑help groups in the Dzongu valley to launch waste‑to‑wealth initiatives.

A senior officer of the Sikkim administration completed an 18‑kilometre trek across the state’s hilly terrain, focusing on cleaning the route and collecting litter along the way. The trek, organized as a public‑service exercise, attracted local attention and highlighted the growing problem of solid waste in remote communities.

In the Dzongu region, a cluster of women‑led Self‑Help Groups (SHGs) observed the officer’s effort and decided to channel the momentum into a structured waste‑to‑wealth program. The groups have begun sorting household waste, composting organic material and exploring small‑scale recycling of plastics and paper to generate income.

Local officials noted that the initiative aligns with Sikkim’s broader green policies, aiming to reduce landfill dependence and create livelihood opportunities in rural areas. The SHGs plan to sell compost to nearby farms and market recycled products, thereby turning environmental stewardship into economic benefit.

The officer’s trek is being cited as a catalyst for community‑driven sustainability, encouraging other districts in the state to replicate similar clean‑up drives and waste‑conversion models.
