Sikkim faces heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods, officials warn

State officials in Sikkim have issued an alert about the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), citing recent observations of accelerated glacier melt in the Himalayan region. The warning, reported by India.com, underscores that several high‑altitude lakes could breach their natural dams if destabilised, potentially releasing large volumes of water downstream.

GLOFs occur when the moraine or ice barrier containing a glacial lake fails, sending floodwaters rushing through valleys and settlements. Sikkim’s steep terrain, coupled with its numerous glacial lakes, makes it particularly vulnerable to such events, especially as rising temperatures intensify melt rates.

Authorities say they are enhancing surveillance of identified lakes, deploying remote‑sensing tools and strengthening early‑warning systems in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority. Communities in downstream districts have been advised to stay alert and follow evacuation protocols should any lake show signs of imminent breach.
