A team of botanists has officially named a newly discovered ginger lily species Hedychium zubeengargianum in honour of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

A group of researchers from the Indian Institute of Plant Sciences announced the discovery of a new ginger lily species in the northeastern state of Assam. The plant, found in the misty hills near Dibrugarh, exhibits bright yellow flowers and a distinctive fragrance.

The species has been formally described as Hedychium zubeengargianum, a name chosen to honour the celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Garg, known for his contributions to Assamese music and culture, has long been a patron of environmental causes in the region.

Scientists highlighted the plant’s unique morphological traits, including its large, lance‑shaped leaves and a robust rhizome system that thrives in the humid forest floor. The discovery adds to the rich biodiversity catalogued in Assam’s protected areas.

The naming of the species is expected to raise awareness about the importance of conserving Assam’s natural heritage, while also celebrating local cultural icons. Further studies are planned to assess the plant’s ecological role and potential horticultural uses.
