The Rashtriya Janata Dal has filed a petition to have two independent members of the Bihar Legislative Council disqualified after they joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Patna – The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has approached the Bihar Legislative Council seeking the removal of two independent MLCs who recently announced their affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The petition cites the anti‑defection provisions of the Constitution, arguing that the legislators have violated the rules governing party allegiance.
The two council members, who were elected as independents earlier this year, formally joined the BJP in a public ceremony last week. Their shift has altered the balance of power in the 75‑member council, strengthening the ruling coalition’s position.
RJD officials say the move undermines democratic norms and request the council speaker to invoke the disqualification clause. The BJP, however, has defended the legislators’ right to associate with any party, and the speaker’s decision is expected in the coming days.
The outcome could influence upcoming legislative debates and may set a precedent for handling similar party‑switching cases in Bihar’s political landscape.
