India's benchmark indices closed in the red on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty falling as a drop in Reliance Industries and a broad sell‑off in IT stocks weighed on market sentiment.

The BSE Sensex slipped about 0.5% to close around 71,800 points, while the NSE Nifty fell roughly 0.6% to end the session near 19,750. The decline came after a sharp pullback in Reliance Industries Ltd., which lost more than 2% on the day, dragging the broader market lower.

IT stocks were the second major drag on the indices, with the Nifty IT index shedding close to 1.2%. Heavyweights such as Infosys, TCS and Wipro all posted declines, reflecting investor caution amid mixed earnings outlooks and global risk aversion.

Other sectors, including banking and consumer goods, managed modest gains but were insufficient to offset the losses in energy and technology. Analysts noted that the market remains sensitive to corporate earnings and macro‑economic cues, and they expect volatility to persist until clearer signals emerge from the upcoming fiscal reports.
