The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has declared a red alert for all coastal districts following a sudden rise in wave height and swell.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) announced a red alert for every coastal district of the state after meteorological data showed a sharp increase in wave height and sea swell. The alert, the highest level in the state's warning system, is intended to prompt immediate precautionary actions across the coastline.
Officials reported that wave heights have risen to 2.5‑3 metres in several locations, with swell periods extending beyond the usual range, raising concerns of coastal erosion and flooding in low‑lying areas. The Indian Meteorological Department has also warned of possible heavy rainfall accompanying the swell, which could exacerbate the situation.
The KSDMA has instructed local authorities to suspend beach tourism, halt fishing operations near the shore, and secure vulnerable infrastructure. Residents in affected districts are advised to stay indoors, avoid coastal zones, and follow updates from official channels.
Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, and relief shelters are being prepared for any displacement. The red alert will remain in force until wave activity recedes to safe levels, as monitored by the disaster management agency.
