Record Nagaland Rainfall Triggers Upper Assam Floods, 80,000 Stranded

Record rainfall over Nagaland on the last week of July has caused unprecedented water levels in the region, with some areas receiving over 200 mm in 24 hours. The excess water has flowed into the Brahmaputra basin, triggering flash floods in the Upper Assam districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, roughly 80,000 residents are currently stranded in isolated villages and on high ground. Relief teams from the Assam Disaster Management Authority have deployed boats and helicopters to evacuate affected families, while local NGOs are distributing food and medical supplies. Authorities warn that heavy rains are expected to continue over the next few days, and residents are urged to stay alert and follow official advisories.
