Railways greenlights direct Machilipatnam‑Kurnool City train in Andhra Pradesh

The Ministry of Railways announced that a new direct service between Machilipatnam on the Bay of Bengal coast and Kurnool City in the interior of Andhra Pradesh has received official approval. The proposal, submitted by the South Central Railway zone, aims to create a seamless rail link across the state’s east‑west corridor.

The new train is expected to cut travel time significantly compared with existing routes that require multiple changes. By providing a single‑train connection, commuters, business travelers and tourists will gain easier access to the agricultural markets of Kurnool and the port facilities near Machilipatnam.

Railway officials indicated that the service could be operational by the next fiscal year, subject to final timetable allocation and rolling‑stock availability. Detailed fare structures and frequency will be released once the schedule is finalised, with an initial plan for a daily run.

Stakeholders from both districts welcomed the move, citing potential economic uplift and improved regional integration. The direct train is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to enhance intra‑state connectivity in underserved corridors.
