The Railway Board has identified 103 heritage railway stations across the country, with Tiruchi Junction and Chidambaram among them, and plans a ‘Station Mahotsav’ to celebrate each station on its anniversary.
The Railway Board released a list of 103 railway stations that qualify as heritage sites, citing their historical importance and architectural value. Among the newly recognised stations are Tiruchi Junction in Tamil Nadu and Chidambaram, both noted for their long service and distinctive structures.
To mark the heritage status, the board has proposed a series of events titled ‘Station Mahotsav’ at each of the identified stations. The celebrations will be timed with the original date of inauguration of each station, allowing local communities and rail enthusiasts to observe the legacy of Indian railways.
Officials said the programme will be coordinated across all railway zones, with activities ranging from cultural performances to exhibitions on the evolution of rail travel. The initiative aims to boost public awareness of railway heritage and encourage preservation efforts at these historic sites.
