The Punjab commission reported 78 stubble‑burning incidents in Amritsar between 15 Sept and 14 Oct 2026, up from 68 the previous year, and has served notices to four officials demanding replies within two days.

The Punjab State Pollution Control Board’s Amritsar division recorded 78 instances of stubble burning between 15 September and 14 October 2026, according to its latest report. This marks a rise from 68 cases logged for the same period in 2025.

In response to the surge, the commission issued formal notices to four senior officials, directing them to submit detailed explanations within 48 hours. The notice cites non‑compliance with existing anti‑burning regulations and seeks corrective action.

The board reiterated that stubble burning contributes to severe air‑quality deterioration, especially during the post‑harvest season, and urged local authorities to enforce stricter monitoring and promote alternative residue‑management practices.

No further disciplinary measures have been announced pending the officials’ replies. The commission has indicated that it will consider additional penalties if the responses are unsatisfactory.
