Punjab to Upgrade Government Schools with ₹2,300 Cr Investment

Punjab’s education minister Harjot Singh Bains unveiled a ₹2,300 crore plan to modernise government schools, noting that 364,000 students have shifted from private to public institutions since 2022.
Punjab’s education department announced a comprehensive upgrade programme for its public schools, allocating a total of ₹2,300 crore for infrastructure, technology and teacher training.
The funding will be spread over the next three years, with the first tranche earmarked for renovating classrooms, installing digital learning tools and improving sanitation facilities.
In a status report presented to the assembly, Minister Harjot Singh Bains highlighted that 364,000 students have enrolled in government schools since 2022, a significant shift from private institutions.
Bains said the initiative aims to make public education more attractive and accessible, especially in rural areas, and pledged that the upgrade will be completed by 2026.
