The Punjab government’s move to scrap the Amritsar Bus Rapid Transit System has been put on hold after the High Court asked for reasons behind the decision.
The Punjab High Court has intervened in the state’s plan to discontinue the Amritsar Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). The court asked the government to explain why the project, initiated at an estimated cost of around Rs 600 crore, should be shut down.
The BRTS scheme, launched to improve public transport in Amritsar, was funded by the state with a budget of roughly six hundred crore rupees. It was intended to provide faster, dedicated bus lanes across the city.
Following the court’s directive, the government’s decision to close the project has been temporarily suspended, pending a detailed response to the judges’ queries.
Legal experts note that the High Court’s involvement underscores the need for transparent justification when large‑scale public‑sector projects are altered or abandoned.
The outcome of the government’s reply will determine whether the BRTS will resume full operations or face a revised shutdown timeline.
