Punjab HC Queries Mandatory Voter ID for Women Under Maiyan-Dhiyan Satkar Scheme

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the Punjab government to explain why a voter ID is made mandatory for women to receive financial aid under the Maiyan-Dhiyan Satkar Yojana.
The Maiyan-Dhiyan Satkar Yojana, launched by the Punjab government, provides financial assistance to women beneficiaries. As part of the scheme’s implementation, the state administration has made possession of a valid voter identity card a prerequisite for availing the benefits.
Taking note of this condition, a division bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a notice to the Punjab government, questioning the rationale behind linking voter ID verification to the disbursement of aid under the scheme. The court sought clarification on whether such a requirement excludes eligible women who may not possess a voter ID.
The state government has been directed to file a detailed response within the stipulated time, explaining the legal and administrative basis for the voter ID mandate. The matter is scheduled for further hearing after the government's reply is received.
