Government staff in Punjab have begun a symbolic hunger strike, demanding the payment of overdue dearness allowance and the reinstatement of the old pension scheme, leaving offices empty and causing public inconvenience.
Punjab's civil servants commenced a symbolic hunger strike today to press for the clearance of pending dearness allowance (DA) and the revival of the previous pension structure. The protest, organized across multiple government offices, has resulted in a complete shutdown of routine administrative work, leaving desks and corridors empty.
The employees have listed the settlement of arrears and the restoration of the old pension scheme as their primary demands, alongside other unresolved grievances. Union representatives said the strike is intended to highlight the financial strain on staff who have been awaiting these benefits for months.
Local residents reported difficulty accessing services as the offices remain closed. Authorities have not yet issued a formal response, but officials indicated that discussions with employee unions are underway to resolve the dispute and resume normal operations.
