The National Capital Region has entered GRAP‑3 mode as particulate matter levels surged, prompting strict traffic and industrial restrictions.
The Delhi-NCR authorities have activated the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) at its highest tier, GRAP‑3, after air quality monitors recorded hazardous concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) across the region. The decision was taken jointly by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to curb further deterioration.
Under GRAP‑3, a series of stringent measures have been ordered: all construction activities are halted, diesel‑powered generators are to be switched off unless essential, and heavy commercial vehicles are barred from entering the city during peak hours. Public transport is being prioritized, and private gasoline‑powered cars are discouraged through temporary odd‑even schemes.
Health officials have issued advisories urging residents, especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor exposure and wear N‑95 masks when venturing out. The curbs will remain in force until air quality improves to safe levels, with daily monitoring to determine any relaxation.
The GRAP‑3 activation follows similar actions taken in previous winter episodes when Delhi’s air quality breached the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Officials emphasize that sustained compliance by industries and citizens is essential to restore breathable air in the capital region.
