The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the state government to prioritise action against false information on social media after a rumour of a non‑incident triggered unrest.
The court took note of a situation where a fabricated event was shared widely on social media platforms, leading to public disturbance in parts of the region.
It observed that such misinformation can quickly escalate tensions and undermine law and order, necessitating immediate intervention by the authorities.
Accordingly, the bench directed the state government to prioritise measures to check the spread of false news and to ensure peace is maintained through timely action.
