Peak September Power Demand Triggers Load Shedding in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu’s electricity grid recorded its highest demand this September, prompting the return of unscheduled load‑shedding across the state.
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) said that electricity consumption across the state peaked in September, reaching levels not seen in recent months. The surge in demand, driven by a combination of hot weather and increased industrial activity, strained the grid and led to a shortage of available supply.
In response, TNEB reinstated unscheduled load‑shedding in several districts to prevent a total system collapse. The cuts were implemented in short, rotating intervals, affecting residential and commercial consumers in both urban and rural areas.
Authorities urged consumers to conserve power by limiting the use of high‑wattage appliances during peak hours. They also indicated that additional power from neighboring states is being mobilised to stabilise the grid and that the situation will be closely monitored over the coming weeks.
The board assured that it is working with power generators to augment supply and minimise further disruptions, while reminding the public that cooperation is essential to maintain grid stability during the high‑demand period.
