Patwaris' Protest Halts Free Property Registry Under Madhya Pradesh Ownership Scheme in Indore

A protest by patwaris in Indore has stopped the free registration of properties under Madhya Pradesh's ownership scheme, with no registrations completed in five days.
The Madhya Pradesh government launched a statewide ownership scheme from Indore, aiming to register five million properties free of charge. However, patwaris in the city have refused to process registrations, citing concerns over Aadhaar verification and future liabilities.
Patwaris argued that linking property records to citizens' Aadhaar cards could expose them to legal and administrative responsibilities they are not prepared to assume. Their refusal has resulted in a complete halt of the free registration drive for the past five days, with no new entries recorded.
A meeting between the protesting patwaris and the state minister overseeing the scheme failed to produce a resolution. The officials could not address the concerns satisfactorily, leaving the registration campaign stalled.
