Paraguayan authorities placed former President Santiago Pena under house arrest on Friday, following his impeachment by the legislature amid a political and financial crisis linked to the collapse of digital bank Ueno.
Paraguayan officials ordered former President Santiago Pena to remain under house arrest on Friday, a day after the lower house voted to impeach him. The move comes as the country grapples with a deepening political and financial turmoil.
Lawmakers cited alleged misconduct and failure to address the fallout from the collapse of Ueno, a digital banking platform that left thousands of depositors in distress. The impeachment vote reflected mounting pressure on Pena to answer for the crisis that has shaken public confidence.
The house arrest order, issued by the judiciary, restricts Pena to his residence while investigations continue. Observers note that the decision underscores Paraguay’s effort to restore stability and signal accountability at the highest levels of government.
