Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram urged the Chief Election Commissioner to step down, citing the ongoing SIR controversy as a breach of institutional credibility.

New Delhi, Oct 4 (ANI) – Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram publicly called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) following a heated dispute surrounding the SIR issue. Chidambaram argued that the credibility of the Election Commission is at stake and that stepping down is the most responsible course of action for the CEC.

The SIR row, which has drawn criticism from opposition parties and civil society, revolves around allegations of procedural irregularities in the handling of a high‑profile case. While details of the case remain under investigation, Chidambaram’s statement adds political pressure on the election authority.

Chidambaram, speaking to media outlets, emphasized that the integrity of the electoral process cannot survive any perception of bias or misconduct. He urged the President and the government to consider the CEC’s resignation as a step toward restoring public confidence.

The Election Commission has not responded to the remarks, and the CEC’s office declined to comment on the allegations. The matter is expected to be debated in Parliament in the coming days, with opposition leaders likely to echo Chidambaram’s demand.

Analysts note that the call for resignation underscores the sensitivity of election‑related controversies in India, especially ahead of upcoming state assembly polls.
