More than 50,000 villages across India have been officially declared free of single‑use plastic, marking a major milestone for the Swachh Bharat mission.

Over 50,000 villages across India have been officially declared single‑use plastic‑free, a significant achievement for the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign.

The declaration was made by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in collaboration with state governments and local panchayats, following verification that villages have eliminated the sale and use of disposable plastic items such as bags, cutlery and packaging.

Officials said the initiative involved community awareness drives, distribution of reusable alternatives, and strict enforcement of the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016. Villages that met the criteria received a certification and will be showcased as models for other rural areas.

The move is expected to reduce plastic pollution in rural waterways and improve public health, while supporting the broader goal of a plastic‑free India by 2030.
