A recent inspection uncovered open drains, pest infestation and lack of hygiene checks at food vendors inside New Delhi railway station, raising health concerns for commuters.

India Today’s on‑site investigation at New Delhi railway station found that several food stalls operate in close proximity to uncovered drainage channels, creating a direct pathway for rodents and insects to reach the cooking areas. The report noted that none of the vendors displayed valid food‑safety certificates, and there were no visible temperature‑control measures for perishable items.

Inspectors observed cockroaches scurrying across preparation tables and droppings near the serving counters, conditions that violate the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines. Open drains along the platform also allowed stagnant water to pool, further encouraging pest breeding.

Station authorities, when approached, acknowledged the findings and said a comprehensive audit of all food outlets would be launched within the week. They pledged to enforce stricter licensing checks and to seal any drainage openings that compromise hygiene.

Public health experts warned that prolonged exposure to such unsanitary environments could increase the risk of food‑borne illnesses among daily commuters, urging travelers to exercise caution while purchasing meals at the station.
