The Central Air Quality Monitoring (CAQM) agency has released a survey showing that only 15 of the 2,013 construction and demolition (C&D) sites in Haryana are equipped with functional surveillance cameras. The data, compiled from field inspections, highlights a stark gap in the state's ability to monitor dust and particulate emissions at active work zones.
Surveillance cameras are a key tool for real‑time tracking of airborne pollutants, enabling authorities to enforce compliance with national air‑quality standards. With less than 1% of sites monitored, the CAQM warns that unregulated emissions could undermine recent efforts to improve air quality in the region.
State officials have been urged to accelerate the installation of functional cameras and integrate them with existing air‑quality monitoring networks. The agency suggests a phased rollout, prioritising sites near densely populated areas and schools, to ensure better protection of public health.
