The Odisha administration has issued a directive to deduct salaries of government employees who fail to pay maintenance grants or alimony, aiming to enforce compliance with court‑ordered obligations.
The Odisha government issued an order mandating that the salaries of any state employee who defaults on court‑mandated maintenance grants or alimony payments be deducted until the dues are cleared. The directive, circulated to all departmental heads, cites the need to uphold legal obligations and protect the rights of beneficiaries.
Under the new rule, the amount deducted will correspond to the outstanding liability and will be recovered directly from the employee's monthly pay. Departments are required to verify pending cases with the relevant courts and submit a compliance report to the finance department within a stipulated timeframe.
Officials said the measure is intended to deter non‑payment and ensure that vulnerable families receive timely financial support. The government has also urged employees to settle any arrears voluntarily to avoid repeated deductions.
The policy applies to all cadres of the state bureaucracy, including teachers, health workers and other regular staff, and will be enforced from the next payroll cycle.
