NITI Aayog and Germany's development agency GIZ India have announced a joint effort to accelerate the decarbonisation of India's road freight sector.
New Delhi – The government think‑tank NITI Aayog and the German development agency GIZ India said they will cooperate to fast‑track the transition of road freight transport to low‑carbon solutions. The partnership aims to create policy road‑maps, promote cleaner vehicle technologies and facilitate the adoption of alternative fuels across the logistics chain.
Both organisations plan to pool research expertise and on‑ground experience to identify practical measures that can reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions from trucks and other heavy vehicles. Workshops, pilot projects and stakeholder consultations are expected to form the core of the collaborative effort.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader climate commitments and the goal of making the freight sector more sustainable while maintaining economic competitiveness. Officials indicated that the joint work will be rolled out in phases, beginning with key freight corridors that carry the highest volume of goods.
By leveraging GIZ’s international best practices and NITI Aayog’s policy‑making authority, the collaboration seeks to set standards that can be replicated nationwide, encouraging private operators to shift towards greener fleets.
The partnership was announced through a joint statement, signalling a coordinated push to meet the country’s emission‑reduction targets for the transport sector.
