New Zealand Opens Six-Month Open Work Visa for Indian Students

New Zealand has revised its post‑study work visa rules, granting Indian graduates a six‑month open work permit.

New Zealand announced a significant amendment to its post‑study work visa framework for Indian nationals. Effective from the upcoming academic session, Indian students completing a recognised qualification in New Zealand will be eligible for a six‑month open work visa, allowing them to seek employment without a prior job offer.
The change replaces the earlier requirement that graduates secure a specific employer before obtaining a work permit. Officials say the move aims to make New Zealand a more attractive destination for Indian talent and to address skill shortages in key sectors.
Education counsellors expect a rise in Indian enrolments as the new provision offers greater flexibility for graduates to gain work experience and potentially transition to longer‑term visas.
The immigration ministry confirmed that applicants must meet standard eligibility criteria, including a minimum qualification level and proof of sufficient funds, before the open work visa is granted.
Stakeholders are monitoring the impact on both the New Zealand labour market and the Indian student community, which has grown steadily over the past decade.
