New Delhi observed International Literacy Day 2026 on September 8 with a coordinated programme titled ULLAS. The event, organized by the Ministry of Education in partnership with local NGOs, featured book fairs, storytelling sessions for children, and panel discussions on literacy challenges in urban India.
Key speakers included education officials and authors who underscored the role of digital tools in expanding access to reading material. Over 5,000 participants, ranging from school students to senior citizens, visited the exhibition halls set up at Connaught Place and the National Library.
The celebrations also launched a city‑wide reading challenge aimed at encouraging residents to read at least one book per month. Organisers said the initiative aligns with the government's goal of improving the national literacy rate ahead of the 2030 Sustainable Development targets.
Security and crowd management were overseen by Delhi Police, ensuring a smooth flow of visitors throughout the day. Feedback from attendees highlighted the diverse range of activities and the opportunity to engage directly with authors and educators.
