New Begonia Species Discovered in Arunachal, Named After Nyishi Tribe’s Neelam Clan

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department announced the discovery of a new begonia species in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The plant, found near the village of Tawang, exhibits distinctive bright red petals and a unique leaf pattern not seen in any previously recorded species. In a gesture of cultural respect, the researchers named the species Begonia neelam, after the Neelam clan of the Nyishi tribe, one of the largest indigenous groups in the state. The naming follows guidelines set by the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, ensuring the species is formally recognized in scientific literature. The discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh and underscores the importance of preserving its fragile ecosystems.
