NEC Boosts Funding for Meghalaya: MRI Centre in Tura, New Classrooms and Startup Hubs

The North Eastern Council announced increased financial support for Meghalaya, earmarking funds for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facility in Tura, additional classrooms and entrepreneurship hubs.
The North Eastern Council (NEC) has approved an additional tranche of funding for the state of Meghalaya, targeting improvements in health, education and entrepreneurship infrastructure. The allocation comes as part of the council’s broader effort to accelerate development in the North‑Eastern region.
Under the new package, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) centre will be set up in Tura, expanding diagnostic capabilities for residents of the Garo Hills. Simultaneously, the state will receive resources to construct new classrooms in existing schools and to establish dedicated startup hubs that will provide co‑working space, mentorship and seed funding for local innovators.
State officials said the investment is expected to create immediate jobs in construction and later in healthcare and tech sectors, while also improving access to quality education and medical services in remote areas. The projects are slated to begin within the next quarter, with the MRI facility projected to become operational by early next year.
The funding boost aligns with Meghalaya’s five‑year development plan, which emphasizes inclusive growth and digital entrepreneurship. Local leaders welcomed the move, noting that the combined focus on health, education and startups could transform the socio‑economic landscape of the region.
