Nearly Half of Paramedical Posts Vacant in 17 North Kashmir Sub‑District Hospitals

The Jammu and Kashmir government reports that about 46% of paramedical positions remain unfilled across 17 sub‑district hospitals in North Kashmir.
The state health department disclosed that nearly one‑half of the sanctioned paramedical posts in seventeen sub‑district hospitals (SDHs) of North Kashmir are currently vacant. The vacancy rate, calculated at 46 per cent, reflects a shortfall in staffing for roles such as lab technicians, radiographers and nursing aides.
Officials said the gap hampers the delivery of basic diagnostic and supportive services, especially in remote areas where these hospitals serve as the primary point of contact for the public. Patients may experience longer waiting times for tests and reduced capacity for emergency care.
The government has indicated that it is reviewing recruitment processes to accelerate appointments. It plans to issue additional notifications and streamline verification procedures to attract qualified candidates.
Health experts warned that sustained understaffing could affect the overall quality of care and increase the burden on existing staff, potentially leading to burnout. The department urged medical colleges and training institutes to encourage graduates to consider postings in the region.
