As the annual winter pollution surge approaches, power plants in the National Capital Region will be subject to intensified emissions checks, officials say.
The environmental clearance board has announced that all thermal power stations operating within the National Capital Region will face heightened emissions monitoring starting next week. The move comes in anticipation of the seasonal rise in air‑pollutant levels that typically occurs during the winter months.
Authorities will deploy continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) at key points of each plant to track pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in real time. Data will be transmitted to a central dashboard, allowing regulators to flag any breaches promptly.
Plant operators have been instructed to ensure that pollution control equipment, including electrostatic precipitators and flue‑gas desulfurization units, are fully functional. Non‑compliance could attract fines or temporary shutdowns under the National Clean Air Programme guidelines.
