NCISM Warns: Labeling Registered AYUSH Doctors as 'Quacks' Lacks Legal Standing

✍️ TOI India 🗓 30 Jul 2026, 11:39 PM 👁 5

The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has clarified that referring to registered AYUSH practitioners as 'quacks' lacks legal footing and may infringe on their professional rights.

The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) issued a statement today warning that calling registered AYUSH doctors "quacks" is without legal basis. The commission emphasized that such terminology can infringe upon the constitutional and professional rights of duly qualified practitioners.

Registered AYUSH doctors are recognized under Indian law as legitimate healthcare professionals. NCISM reiterated that they are entitled to legal protection and respect, and that any derogatory label may be considered defamatory.

The warning comes amid growing public debate over the status of alternative medicine practitioners. NCISM urges the medical community and media to use accurate and respectful language when referring to AYUSH professionals.
