Narmada River rises 10 ft at Onkarshewar as Bargi Dam releases 3,990 cumecs

Continuous rain in the upper catchments of the Amarkantak, Dindori, Mandla and Jabalpur basins has pushed the Narmada's level up by about 10 feet at Onkarshewar, prompting the release of nearly 4,000 cumecs from Bargi Dam.
Heavy rainfall over the Amarkantak, Dindori, Mandla and Jabalpur catchment areas has caused the water level of the Narmada River at Onkarshewar in Madhya Pradesh to surge by roughly ten feet. The rise was recorded after successive days of intense precipitation that saturated the upstream reservoirs.
In response, authorities at the Bargi Dam have opened all thirteen spillway gates to manage the excess inflow. The dam is currently discharging close to 3,990 cubic metres per second, a volume aimed at preventing overtopping and safeguarding downstream communities.
Officials from the state water resources department emphasized that the controlled release is a precautionary measure and that flood warnings have been issued for vulnerable stretches along the river. Residents in low‑lying areas have been advised to stay alert and follow any evacuation directives.
The situation remains under close monitoring, with updates expected as the monsoon pattern evolves and water levels stabilize.
