The Government Medical College in Aizawl performed its inaugural open‑heart operation, marking a milestone for Mizoram’s healthcare.
Aizawl – The lone medical college in Mizoram successfully carried out its first open‑heart surgery, a landmark achievement for the state’s medical infrastructure. The operation was performed at the Government Medical College, the only tertiary teaching hospital in the region.
A multidisciplinary team of cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists and nursing staff from the college conducted the procedure using modern cardiac‑surgery equipment installed earlier this year. The patient, whose identity was not disclosed, recovered well in the post‑operative intensive care unit.
College officials said the success demonstrates the institution’s growing capability to deliver complex cardiac care locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to other states for such treatment. They also indicated plans to expand cardiac services and train more specialists.
The milestone comes as Mizoram strives to improve its healthcare outcomes, especially in remote areas where access to advanced medical procedures has been limited. The achievement is expected to boost confidence in the state’s public health system and encourage further investment in medical technology.
