An amendment to Mizoram’s marriage law now requires a court‑issued divorce certificate before a person can remarry.

The Mizoram state legislature has passed an amendment to the existing marriage law, stipulating that individuals seeking to remarry must present a court‑issued divorce certificate.
The change aims to curb informal separations and ensure that divorces are legally documented, officials said. Under the previous provisions, a simple mutual‑consent divorce could be registered without a court order, leading to concerns about verification.
The amendment came into effect recently, and the state’s law department will oversee compliance. Marriage registrars have been instructed to verify the certificate before issuing a new marriage registration.
Legal experts note that the move aligns Mizoram with other Indian states that already require court validation for divorce before remarriage, and could reduce disputes over marital status.
The government has not announced any penalties for non‑compliance, but registrars may reject applications lacking the required document.
