Engineers within Meta's newly formed Applied AI unit are expressing widespread discontent, describing their work environment as a 'mess' and 'soul-crushing'. The situation has escalated amidst significant layoffs and internal backlash.

Meta's recently established Applied AI unit, intended to support Mark Zuckerberg's significant investment in artificial intelligence, is reportedly experiencing internal turmoil. Approximately 6,500 engineers assigned to this unit have voiced strong objections to their working conditions, characterizing the tasks as "soul-crushing" and comparing the environment to a "gulag."

The discontent within the unit appears to be a significant issue, with reports of engineers resorting to public criticism during company events, including one instance where an executive was insulted during a company livestream. This internal dissent surfaces at a time when Meta has undergone substantial layoffs, impacting its workforce.

Even Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, has acknowledged that the company's AI rollout has been "atrocious." This admission from senior leadership underscores the challenges in managing morale and operational effectiveness within the rapidly evolving AI division, contributing to the collapse of morale among the engineers.
