The Meghalaya government has ruled out moving the Rs 150‑crore ropeway project planned for Shillong, stating it is not a simple copy‑and‑paste exercise.
Meghalaya's state administration announced that the proposed ropeway linking key tourist spots in Shillong will remain at its originally approved location, dismissing calls to shift the project elsewhere. Officials emphasized that relocating a venture of this scale involves extensive technical, environmental and financial assessments, and cannot be treated as a routine adjustment.
The ropeway, estimated at Rs 150 crore, was conceived to boost tourism and improve connectivity across the hilly terrain surrounding Shillong. Detailed feasibility studies and land acquisition processes have already been completed for the current alignment.
By confirming that the project will proceed as initially planned, the government aims to avoid further delays and cost overruns. The authorities indicated that construction is slated to begin later this year, subject to final clearances, and that the ropeway is expected to become operational within the next few years, enhancing the city's appeal to domestic and international visitors.
