The Meghalaya government has increased its sports allocation to Rs 840 crore and announced a substantial hike in financial incentives for athletes and sports bodies.

The state cabinet of Meghalaya approved a revised sports budget of Rs 840 crore for the current fiscal year, marking a significant increase over the previous allocation. The additional funds are earmarked for infrastructure development, training programs, and competitive grants.

Alongside the budget boost, the government unveiled a major revision of its incentive scheme, raising cash rewards for medal-winning athletes and offering higher subsidies to state-run sports academies. Officials said the move aims to encourage broader participation and improve performance at national and international events.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the state secretariat, where the sports minister highlighted the state's commitment to nurturing talent in disciplines such as football, athletics, and indigenous games. The revised budget and incentive structure will be implemented from the upcoming financial quarter.

Stakeholders, including coaches and athletes, welcomed the decision, noting that increased financial support could address long‑standing gaps in training facilities and equipment. The state plans to monitor the impact of the new incentives through periodic reviews.

Meghalaya hopes the enhanced funding will translate into better results at upcoming national championships and raise the profile of the region in India's sporting landscape.
