Meghalaya Government Unveils Amended 2020 MIRSS Rules to Boost Migrant Workers' Safety

The Meghalaya state government has announced an amendment to the Migrant Workers' Safety Scheme (MIRSS) Rules 2020, signalling a renewed focus on the welfare of migrant labourers operating in the region. The revised framework introduces stricter safety protocols, mandates the registration of migrant workers, and clarifies the responsibilities of employers and contractors in ensuring safe working conditions. Officials highlighted that the changes address gaps identified during earlier implementation and bring the state’s regulations in line with central labour welfare guidelines. The amended rules will come into force as stipulated by the Labour Department, which will also oversee compliance and periodic reviews.
