Meghalaya government launches grant scheme to address lack of secondary schools in seven blocks

The Meghalaya government has announced a new grant scheme aimed at tackling the absence of secondary schools in seven of its blocks. An official survey earlier this year highlighted that these districts lack any institutions offering education beyond the primary level, forcing students to travel long distances for higher studies.
Under the approved scheme, the state will allocate funds to establish new secondary schools, upgrade existing primary schools to include higher grades, and provide necessary teaching and learning resources. The financial assistance will be disbursed to local authorities and community groups that propose viable school development plans.
State officials said the initiative is expected to reduce dropout rates and improve educational outcomes for rural students. Implementation is slated to begin in the upcoming academic year, with periodic reviews to ensure schools become operational and meet quality standards.
