Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Reviews State's El Niño Preparedness and Climate Risks

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma recently chaired a high‑level review of Meghalaya's preparedness for the anticipated El Niño phenomenon, which could alter monsoon patterns and intensify weather extremes. The meeting brought together officials from the State Disaster Management Authority, the Water Resources Department and agricultural agencies to assess current readiness.
The discussion focused on water‑resource management, early‑warning systems, agricultural advisories and coordination mechanisms among district administrations. Participants reported that contingency plans, including pre‑positioned relief kits and updated flood‑forecast models, are already in place.
Sangma stressed the importance of bolstering climate‑resilient infrastructure, protecting communities in flood‑prone valleys, and aligning state actions with national climate‑adaptation frameworks. He urged continuous monitoring and inter‑agency cooperation to minimise potential damage from extreme weather linked to El Niño.
The chief minister also called on farmers to adopt climate‑smart practices and on local bodies to stay vigilant as the El Niño outlook evolves.
